Different types of mulchers
A distinction is made between a flail mulcher and a sickle mulcher. With a flail mulcher, the flexible flail tools can also process smaller branches. These tools are insensitive to foreign bodies and can therefore be used in extensive grassland maintenance.
Sickle mulchers have horizontal blades to achieve a clean cut. These tools work like a lawn mower and are more sensitive to foreign bodies. Therefore they are used in intensive grassland maintenance. (E.g.: In orchards, airfields, golf courses, etc.).
What types of mulching mower you can choose?
First of all, the mulching mowers can be divided according to two main criteria:
- weight (light, medium and heavy)
- combination with the tractor, carrier vehicle (fixed linkage, side shift, hydraulic shift)
Depending on the work to be done, you can choose one for your tractor/carrier vehicle from different criteria of the versatile professional mulchers:
- flail mulcher in rear- or front-mounted version
- front-rear mulcher in combination
- side mulcher in rear mounting
- mulcher with collecting hopper

ADVANTAGES OF MULCHING:
- Soil protection: the soil is protected from drying out by the mulch layer, which retains moisture and reduces evaporation.
- Natural fertilizer: grass that has been mowed turns into a natural fertilizer that provides nutrients to the lawn and supports its growth.
- Weed suppression: is achieved by the mulch layer as it blocks the growth of weed seeds, reducing the appearance of weeds in the lawn.
- Time and money savings: mulching eliminates the need to collect and dispose of mowed grass, saving time and effort in lawn care and potentially reducing costs associated with green waste disposal.
What criteria should you look for when buying a mulcher?
There are several criteria that should be considered for buying a mulcher, so that you also find the perfect device with the best mulching technology for you and your needs.
The following criteria should influence your purchase decision:
- width
- drive
- field of application
- price / performance
We will show you in detail how important these criteria are in the following sections.
Width
The width depends on how large or small the area to be mulched is. The width depends on the power of the carrier tractor. For large areas, a wide mulcher or a mulch combination for mounting on the tractor or carrier vehicle is worthwhile.
Drive
The tractor must have enough power to drive and pull the mulcher. If you want to work a large area and have a wide mulcher, this is of no use if you cannot use it due to insufficient power. You need more power the wider the mulcher is. The more power, the more efficient the work. This is especially important if you want to work difficult areas with your mulcher.
Field of application
This is the most important criterion. What kind of mulching do you want to do and where do you want to use it? If you want to use the device in a forest area with a lot of brushwood, you need a hammer flail mulcher. The branches will be crushed by the sturdy flails. If you want to mulch an area with stones, a flail mulcher with Y-blades is recommended. Although the mowing area is only moderately well mowed, the blades of the device are not damaged by the stones during work.
A sickle mulcher is the best choice when the area is worked intensively but has few foreign bodies. In contrast to the flail mulcher, the cutting pattern is significantly better.
A side slope or boom mulcher should be selected if you want to work slopes, ditches or areas away from paved driveways. Some models have hydraulics to adjust the position. Therefore, these devices can be used for both.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What does mulching mean?
Mulching is the mowing of grass areas in one step, the cuttings are placed behind the machine to cover (mulch) the grass area.
During mulching, the cuttings are shredded once again by this technique and can then be left on the mown area. The background is simple: no nutrients are removed from the grass surface in this way. The shredded cuttings decompose quickly on the grass and are thus available to the greenery as fertilizer.
What is a mulcher?
A mulcher is a perfect addition to your tractor. It can be used to operate fallow land, pasture or landscape maintenance as well as hedge trimming work. Through a mulcher, the work in the grassland area is facilitated many times over. In addition, you get a healthy soil due to the mowing and mulching technology. The area is mowed and the grassland or even the woody growth is directly shredded and distributed. The areas can thus be directly maintained and the soil kept sustainably fertile.
How does a mulcher work?
The functionality of a mulcher is quite simple. The mulching blades/ hammers are arranged on the electronically dynamically balanced rotor shaft with a generous self-aligning roller bearing to oscillate freely and overlap. The flail mower knives/ hammers mulch the growth at the individually set height during mowing and mulching. The mulched material is transported past the shredding bars. This results in fine shredding and chopping. The mulch material is guided along the housing by the barrel roller and then evenly distributed behind the machine. Depending on the application, the machines are equipped with blade knives or with hammer flails.
Mowing or Mulching the lawn: Which one is better?
The decision whether to mow or mulch the lawn depends on personal preferences and needs. Mowing cuts the lawn and disposes of the grass. Mulching leaves the cut grass on the lawn, acts as fertilizer and protects the soil. A combination of both methods is possible. The choice depends on individual preferences, lawn conditions and time.
